The main military leaders for the United States and Japan were General Douglass MacArthur and Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. MacArthur was the American general in charge of the American pacific forces. He recaptured many islands like the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. "MacArthur received a medal for his defense in the Philippines" (Kooiker, 6). His largest campaign was the invasion of Luzon. MacArthur was also in charge of the Japanese surrender which took place in Tokyo Bay on board the battleship Missouri on September 2, 1945 (Douglass MacArthur :: Duty in World War II -- Britannica Online Encyclopedia). Admiral Yamamoto was the man behind the attack on Pearl Harbor and many other operations like Midway and Guadalcanal. Yamamoto was killed by an aerial ambush by the U.S. Air force while he was inspecting an island in 1943 (People-Japan).
