The United States warned Japan to surrender or to face "prompt and utter destruction." When Japan did not surrender President Harry S. Truman made one of the most controversial decisions to ever be made: the decision to drop the atomic bomb. On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb named "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. The effect the bomb had on the city was terrible. "Hiroshima's population has been estimated at 350,000; approximately
70,000 died immediately from the explosion and another 70,000 died from
radiation within five years"(Rosenberg 1). After Japan still did not surrender, a second bomb named "Fat Man" was dropped on the city of Nagasaki three days later. Like Little Boy, the aftermath was devastating. Fat Man was a more powerful bomb than little boy and did a massive amount of damage. Japanese surrender was soon to follow.
